How to Extend a Monthly Hotel Stay

Published Oct 20, 2026

Extending a monthly hotel stay is normal, and hotels that take monthly guests expect it. The rule of thumb: ask as early as you can, two weeks before your checkout date if possible. Your room is only guaranteed until the date you booked. After that, the hotel can sell it to someone else.

Why asking early matters

A hotel manages its rooms by date. Your room is yours until your checkout day; past that, it goes back into the pool. If you ask two weeks out, the hotel can usually keep you in the same room at a known price. If you ask the day before, the room may already be booked, and you are choosing between a different room, a different rate, or a different hotel. Holiday weeks and local events make this worse, so look at the calendar, not just your own plans.

How to ask

Send a short written message to the front desk or the person who handles your bill:

"Hello. I am in room [number], booked until [date]. I would like to extend my stay until [new date]. Can you confirm the rate and the new total in writing, including taxes and fees? Thank you."

Written beats spoken here. The reply is your record of the new dates and the new price.

What changes when you extend

  • Rate. The monthly rate for your second month can differ from the first. Rates move with demand, so ask for the new full total, not just the nightly number.
  • Taxes. A longer stay can change how lodging taxes apply. In Texas, guests who stay 30 or more days and notify the hotel in writing beforehand are exempt from the 6 percent state hotel tax from the day of notification; without written notice, the state tax applies for the first 30 days and stops after that. Local taxes have their own rules. Other states differ. Ask the hotel to show the tax lines on your new total. This is general information, not tax advice.
  • Deposit and agreement. Some hotels sign a fresh monthly rate agreement for each block, or adjust the deposit. Ask whether anything needs a new signature.
  • Room. An extension is also the moment to ask for a different room if the first one was not right: quieter side, higher floor, better light for work.

If the hotel cannot extend you

Ask two follow-ups: can they offer another room type for the extra weeks, and when does a room like yours free up next. If neither works, start looking early enough to move without rushing. Hotels in the same area often have very different availability on the same dates.

Two weeks before every checkout date

Decide then: leave, extend, or move. Making it a habit on every block keeps the choice yours instead of the hotel's.
