Home Repairs and Renovations: A Hotel While Your House Is Fixed
Published Oct 21, 2026
Water damage, a kitchen rebuild, foundation work, a roof after a storm: some repairs push you out of your own home for weeks. A monthly hotel stay is a common answer, close enough to check on the work, normal enough that life keeps running. If the damage is an insurance claim, talk to your insurer before you book anything: many policies cover temporary housing, and the rules about what they pay shape everything else.
If insurance is involved
Ask your insurer three things before booking: whether your policy covers temporary housing, what daily or monthly budget it allows, and how payment works (direct billing, reimbursement, or an advance). Keep every folio and receipt from day one. If insurance is not involved, skip this paragraph and treat the stay like any other monthly booking.
Choosing the hotel
- Stay near home. You will visit the house, meet contractors and collect mail more often than you think.
- Kitchenette first. Eating every meal out for a month is where the budget quietly doubles.
- Laundry on-site, especially with kids or if the works took your washer with them.
- Weekly housekeeping is enough; you are living there, not vacationing.
- Parking that fits your real life: your own cars, and space if family visits.
Booking against a moving finish date
Repair timelines slip more often than not. Book a monthly rate with extension and early-checkout terms in writing, and prefer a weekly payment schedule if the end date is genuinely uncertain. When the contractor says two more weeks, extending a hotel by two weeks is an email; leaving a prepaid month early is a negotiation.
Keeping life running
- Forward mail or hold it, and tell the hotel how to label your deliveries.
- Keep school, work and activity routines anchored to the hotel address.
- Photograph the room on arrival and keep the first folio; if insurance is paying, paperwork is part of the job.
- If pets are displaced too, confirm pet terms in writing before move-in.
