Traveling Healthcare Workers: Picking a Monthly Hotel Near the Hospital

Published Oct 20, 2026

A travel assignment lives or dies on three hotel details: the real commute at your shift times, a room you can actually sleep in during the day, and terms that match a 13-week contract that might extend or end early. Check those three before you look at anything else.

Measure the commute at your shift times

A hospital that is 15 minutes away at noon can be 35 minutes away at 6:45 in the morning. Before you book, check the drive at the hours you will actually make it: the start of your shift and the end. Do it for both day shift and night shift if you rotate. Map apps let you set a departure time; use it. Also check the parking situation at both ends: hotel parking cost and hospital parking cost come out of the same stipend.

Set up for sleeping at odd hours

If you work nights, your sleep happens when the hotel is loudest. Ask for a room away from elevators, ice machines, the pool and the highway side, on a top floor if possible. Blackout curtains matter more than the view. Ask when housekeeping comes and whether they can skip your room or come on your schedule, so a knock at 10 in the morning does not end your night. A white-noise app and earplugs are cheap insurance for the first week while you learn the building.

Match the terms to a 13-week contract

Travel contracts have their own rhythm: they usually run about 13 weeks, they often extend, and sometimes they end early. Your hotel terms should bend the same way.

  • Ask for a rate for the full assignment, in writing, not four separate weekly bookings.
  • Ask how extending works: same rate, same room, how much notice.

Ask about early checkout: if the contract ends two weeks early, what do you owe?

  • Ask what the rate includes: internet for charting and video calls, laundry, a fridge and microwave or kitchenette for meal prep, and a fitness room if that is how you decompress.
  • If you take a housing stipend instead of agency housing, its tax treatment depends on your situation. Your agency or a tax professional can explain how the rules apply to you; the hotel side stays the same either way.

What good looks like

The right hotel for an assignment answers the rate question in writing within a day, names a room type that fits your sleep schedule, and puts the extension and early-checkout terms in the same message. If getting answers is hard before you book, it will not get easier after.
